Bang on a Can Summer Festival & Loud Weekend
This July, I had the opportunity to spend three weeks participating in the Bang on a Can Summer Festival, held at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts. More than thirty young musicians - performers and composers from around the world - came together for the festival. The culmination of the three weeks was Loud Weekend, during which we had the chance to hear thirty concerts over the course of three days.
During the Summer Festival and Loud Weekend, I presented three of my works. The first was Interjeras from Balta tamsa for three strings, a piece I had written previously and which will soon be released on LP. It was performed by Olivia Marckx (cello), Ethan Cavanac (viola), and Lora Kmieliauskaitė (violin). The second was a short composition, running / drumming, for cello and bass clarinet, written during the festival and performed by Olivia Marckx (cello) and Ken Thomson (bass clarinet). The third was Albedo, for voice and large ensemble, written specifically for Loud Weekend and performed by the fellows of Ensemble A, conducted by Nick Photinos.
Throughout the program, we also had wonderful composers’ seminars, where we presented our work and discussed each other’s music together with Michael Gordon, Julia Wolfe, and David Lang. They became a great source of inspiration for me. All these experiences and impressions are still very much with me, and I know they will remain in my memory for a long time.
Thank you to the Lithuanian Music Information Centre and the Lithuanian Culture Institute for making this opportunity possible.
